In cases of severe infection or where the tooth is not savable, extraction of the tooth is the best option.
Extractions can be simple, sectional or surgical.
Simple extractions require no incisions or sutures afterwards and heal without any complications.
Surgical extractions are more complex and will often require incision into the tissues, removal of bone and placement of sutures. These will heal really well too, however there may be swelling and a longer healing time associated with them.
Wisdom teeth are often best extracted once they become symptomatic as they usually present long term problems.
