Dental Emergencies at JK Dental, Hoppers Crossing
- Do Not Panic
- Get someone to bring you to the Dentist
- We recommend you familiarise yourself with the following in case of an emergency.
- Dental Emergency can be one of the most common reasons to attend the Dentist. Emergencies can range from severe toothache, a broken tooth to dental trauma resulting in teeth fracturing or getting knocked out
- If you knock out a tooth due to dental trauma then find the tooth, hold it by the crown, clean any debris and wash slightly under water. If you are able to, then place the tooth back in the socket. Otherwise, place it in a glass of milk and bring yourself and the tooth to the Dentist. DO NOT remove or scrub any tissue fragements from tooth. In case of a cut lip or bleeding apply cold compress or an ice pack to the area to help with the swelling
- In such cases immediate care in the first 15 minutes can be critical to the long term survival of the tooth. Therefore it is recommended to attend the Dentist immediately.
- If you develop a severe toothache then do not panic. Rinse your mouth with water and gently floss to remove food that could be trapped in between the teeth. Come to the dentist immediately.
- If you are bleeding from an extraction socket and have run out of gauze then bit firmly on a wet tea bag to stop the bleeding. Call the Dentist immediately.
- If you have bitten your lip, cheek or tongue then apply cold compress of an ice pack to reduce the swelling. If there is heavy bleeding then attend the dentist or an emergency department immediately.
- If an orthodontic wire is cutting into your lip, cheek or tongue then place beeswax, gauze, tea bag or a piece of cotton on it and attend the dentist. If wire has lodged into the cheek, lip or tongue then DO NOT attempt to remove it, and attend the dentist immediately.
- If you have had facial trauma and suspect that you have a jaw fracture, then apply cold compress or an ice pack to your jaw and attend the dentist or the emergency department immediately.
- Prevention is always better than cure and that is why we recommend wearing a custom fitted mouthguard during sports and attending the dentist for regular check ups and preventative treatment.
